The Important Mr. Pewee and His 'Evening World' Friends
This Sunday newspaper comic strip follows the misadventures of Mr. Pewee through six sequential panels, each building on visual gags involving a dinner party and increasingly absurd situations with a turkey. The strip demonstrates the emerging grammar of early comics: bordered panels, speech balloons, and a recurring protagonist whose exaggerated expressions drive the humor. Multiple artists contributed drawings, reflecting the collaborative production methods of Sunday comics pages in the early 1900s. The strip's reliance on slapstick and domestic chaos exemplifies the humor conventions that dominated newspaper comic sections, which served as the direct precursor to the modern comic book format.
