The Important Mr. Peewee, the Great Little Man
This Sunday comic strip follows Mr. Peewee and Miss Sixfoot on a shopping expedition that unfolds across four panels. The narrative moves fluidly from left to right, top to bottom—a visual structure that became standard in newspaper comics. Peewee, a diminutive character, interacts with larger figures and various merchants; his tiny stature contrasts with his confident bearing. The strip demonstrates early comic vocabulary: dialogue balloons advance plot, recurring characters anchor reader interest, and sequential panels show cause and effect. Drawn in bold black ink with careful cross-hatching, it exemplifies the visual economy required for newspaper reproduction. Such strips in the Sunday pages and dailies established the formal language—panel composition, lettering, body language—that would form the foundation of the modern comic book.
