Joe and Asbestos
· September 4, 1925

A newspaper comic strip featuring Joe and his animal companion Asbestos, rendered in the black-ink style typical of 1920s Sunday pages. The strip demonstrates the visual conventions that defined early comics: sequential panels with speech balloons advancing a narrative through action and dialogue. Here, Joe's mischief—stealing his father's hat and coat—triggers escalating physical comedy across multiple scenes. The recurring characters and domestic setting reflect the humor comics mined from family life and childhood pranks. Such strips, syndicated across hundreds of newspapers, established the visual grammar and character-driven storytelling that would form the foundation of the comic book industry.
