Joe of the Musical Habit
· September 10, 1905

This newspaper comic strip follows Joe, a character afflicted with an irresistible compulsion to sing and dance at every opportunity. The six-panel sequence demonstrates the visual conventions emerging in early 1900s comics: speech balloons containing dialogue and sound effects, sequential panel layout tracking cause and effect, and exaggerated physical comedy. Joe's uncontrollable bursts of music—whether prompted by conversation or spontaneous impulse—drive the gag structure across the strip. The bold black linework and caricatured figures typify the style of newspaper Sunday pages that preceded the modern comic book, establishing the language of panels, recurring characters, and visual humor that would define the medium.
