Elmer—He Goes on the War Path
· October 4, 1925

This Sunday comic strip follows Elmer, a young protagonist whose mischievous schemes escalate across nine sequential panels. The narrative progresses from Elmer's plan to recruit neighborhood children for a "war" game, through his recruitment efforts, to an escalating series of comic disasters culminating in physical chaos. The strip employs the visual conventions pioneered in early newspaper comics: rectangular panels arranged in grid formation, speech balloons containing dialogue, and expressive cartooning that conveys action and emotion through line work. The recurring character and serialized gag structure typified the Sunday funny pages that served as direct predecessors to the comic book format, establishing narrative techniques and character development that would define the medium.
