Just Boy—Elmer Gives His Scheme a Work Out
· April 26, 1925

This Sunday newspaper strip follows the misadventures of a young character named Elmer as he attempts to execute a scheme involving paint and mischief. Divided into eight panels with consistent framing and careful use of architectural perspective, the strip employs speech balloons and sequential visual narrative to build comedic timing. The artist renders detailed domestic and outdoor settings, while character expressions and body language carry the humor across the page. By the 1920s, comic strips had become the primary vehicle for visual storytelling in American newspapers, establishing conventions—recurring characters, panel-based layout, word-picture integration—that would directly shape the emergence of comic books in the following decade.
