A comedy strip about Buddie and his tough friend Bucky Kelly, shown here the morning after an overnight visit. The humor turns on canine appetite and the owner's exasperation: Bucky has devoured everything, yet remains perpetually hungry. The strip employs the visual vocabulary of newspaper comics—sequential panels, speech balloons, expressive character design—that emerged from the Sunday funnies of the 1890s. By the 1920s, such dailies and Sundays formed the foundation of American comic art, establishing conventions of timing, body language, and recurring characters that would define the medium for decades.
