Just Dog
· March 4, 1923

A dog named Bucky confronts a cat trapped in a tree. The strip demonstrates the visual vocabulary of 1920s newspaper comics: multiple panels arranged left-to-right, speech balloons revealing character voice and motivation, and recurring animal protagonists. The gag depends on the audience's familiarity with Bucky's competitive relationship with cats—a staple of early comic strip humor. Dickey's pen line shows the cross-hatching and bold outlines typical of the era, when newspaper Sunday pages and dailies served as the primary venue for sequential narrative art and launched the formal language that would define comic books.
