Mamma Katzenjammer Shipwrecked and Saved unfolds across six panels: Mamma, stranded on a rocky outcrop, is rescued by Hans and a crew firing a life-line cannon. The gag escalates from Mamma's panicked cry to a blast that nearly misses her, a rope caught triumphantly, and a second survivor hauled ashore. Rudolf Dirks launched *The Katzenjammer Kids* in 1897 for the New York Journal, directly adapting Wilhelm Busch's *Max und Moritz*. Its innovations — sequential panels of fixed size, integrated speech balloons, recurring characters with consistent visual identities — became the structural DNA of the American comic strip and, by extension, the comic book. These Sunday pages were the form's laboratory.
