Six panels follow Hans and Fritz as they recruit a rotund adult onto a toboggan, sabotage his ride with a snowball, and send the whole party careening into a snowbank. Rudolf Dirks's draftsmanship is confident and kinetic — figures tilt and tumble against spare winter backgrounds, and the speech balloons carry the strip's signature German-inflected dialect: *"Der laws of gravitation vill do der rest!"* The *Katzenjammer Kids*, launched in the *New York Journal* in 1897, is among the earliest strips to use sequential panels and speech balloons as a stable, repeatable grammar. That grammar — page grids, integrated text, recurring cast — migrated almost unchanged into the first comic books of the 1930s, making Sunday pages like this one the direct ancestors of the medium.
