Katzenjammer Kids — 1909-07-04

"Der Glorious 4th in der Glorious West!" Twelve color panels follow the Captain and Hans through a Fourth of July cannon-building scheme gone spectacularly wrong. They purchase fuses in Chinatown, stuff gunpowder into a barrel lashed to a tree, and detonate it — blasting themselves skyward in panel 8's full-width explosion before landing in a smoking heap. Bystanders then shake them down for the dollar-fifty the stunt cost. Rudolph Dirks launched *The Katzenjammer Kids* in the *New York Journal* in 1897, directly adapting Wilhelm Busch's *Max und Moritz*. His innovations — sequential panels at fixed size, speech balloons as narrative engine, a cast of recurring characters in an ongoing comic universe — became the structural DNA from which comic books would eventually be cut and stapled.
