Rudolph Dirks launched *Katzenjammer Kids* for Hearst in 1897, directly adapting Wilhelm Busch's *Max und Moritz*. Its consistent cast, sequential panels, and integrated word-picture storytelling helped fix the visual grammar that Sunday supplements exported worldwide — the same grammar that, repackaged and staple-bound in the 1930s, became the comic book.
