Keeping Up With the Joneses
Pop Momand's *Keeping Up With the Joneses* ran as a weekly strip in the *New York Globe* from 1913 onward, following the McGill family's competitive social climbing. The strip employed the visual vocabulary that newspaper comics had established by the 1910s: sequential panels, speech balloons, and recurring domestic characters. Momand's gag structure—here, aspirations to aviation meeting practical obstacles—centered on middle-class anxiety and consumption. The strip's longevity and syndication made it a fixture of the Sunday funny pages, influencing how newspapers marketed comics as a major draw for readers and establishing the sitcom-like family unit as a durable comic formula.
