Keeping Up with the Joneses
· January 17, 1914

This Sunday strip follows a domestic comedy centered on social rivalry and competitive spending. The narrative unfolds across four panels: a character describes a hunting accident, another character deflects blame by invoking Colonel Mustard's authority, the Colonel attempts to resolve the dispute, and finally a physical confrontation erupts. The strip employs the standard visual vocabulary of early newspaper comics—sequential panels, speech balloons, and recurring domestic characters—that would become foundational to comic book design. The humor derives from class anxieties and neighborly competition, reflecting the strip's focus on middle-class aspiration and one-upmanship among suburbanites trying to match their neighbors' status.
