Keeping Up with the Joneses
A Sunday newspaper comic strip featuring the social-climbing Jones family navigating domestic life and aspirational consumer culture. The strip employs the visual vocabulary that defined early comics: sequential panels, speech balloons advancing narrative and humor, and recurring characters in continuing situations. Created during the formative years of newspaper comics, when Sunday pages like this established the medium's fundamental grammar—the panel grid, word-image integration, and serialized character development that would become foundational to comic books. The strip's humor derives from domestic situations and social pretension, themes that reflected American middle-class anxieties during the early twentieth century.
