Kernel Cootie

This Sunday strip follows a portly military officer through five panels of escalating chaos. A soldier arrives with what he claims is a "foxy" idea; within moments, a stranger appears uninvited, possessions vanish, and the bewildered officer finds himself robbed and stripped of his clothes. The strip employs the visual vocabulary that shaped early comics: sequential panels advancing the gag, speech balloons capturing rapid-fire dialogue, and exaggerated body language conveying emotion and movement. The recurring cast—the Kernel and his hapless predicaments—appeared regularly in newspapers of the 1920s, establishing character continuity that would become central to comic strip storytelling. Like the contemporaneous work of Felix the Cat and Bringing Up Father, Kernel Cootie used the Sunday newspaper page to develop comic timing through layout and repetition.
