Kernel Cootie—Batting Today for Bud Fisher
A Sunday strip installment featuring the Kernel character scheming to win over a young woman's affections. The four-panel sequence builds through escalating comic situations: first offering flattery, then suggesting jealousy as motivation, proposing a direct approach, and finally executing a slapstick collision that sends both characters tumbling. The strip demonstrates the visual storytelling conventions emerging in newspaper comics of the 1920s—sequential panels advancing a narrative gag, speech balloons carrying dialogue and internal monologue, and exaggerated figure drawing for comedic effect. This era of daily and Sunday newspaper strips established the fundamental language that would define comic books.
