Little Sammy Sneeze
· July 9, 1905

This Sunday strip follows a recurring cast—a boy, his parents, and relatives—through six sequential panels depicting the consequences of an unstoppable sneeze. The narrative unfolds left to right across three tiers, using speech balloons to establish setup and reaction. Each panel builds visual momentum as the sneeze's force escalates, overturning furniture and disrupting domestic life. The strip demonstrates the formal vocabulary emerging in early newspaper comics: consistent characters, panel-to-panel continuity, and escalating physical comedy. Published in the Sunday supplements that preceded the modern comic book, these strips established foundational techniques—sequential art, visual gags tied to narrative progression, and the enduring appeal of slapstick—that became central to American comics.
