Lord Longbow Demonstrates His Knowledge of Cat Nature
· September 15, 1912

This Sunday comic strip follows Lord Longbow, a character defined by eccentric expertise in animal behavior. Across four panels, he explains feline psychology while seated at a piano with a kitten, employing physical comedy and observational humor. The strip exemplifies early newspaper comics' visual vocabulary: sequential panels, speech balloons carrying explanation and dialogue, and a recurring protagonist whose peculiar knowledge drives the gag. By 1912, Sunday newspaper comics had become a standard feature, establishing the formal grammar that would shape comic books for decades. Artists during this period refined panel-to-panel narrative flow and character consistency, creating the foundation for the medium's visual language.
