Lucy and Sophie Say Goodbye
This Sunday strip follows two young women through a sequence of increasingly chaotic farewells in a wheat field. The narrative unfolds across six panels: Lucy and Sophie exchange goodbyes, debate departure, encounter an obstruction, commandeer a horse-drawn vehicle, and exit in a cloud of commotion—each panel advancing the gag through visual escalation rather than dialogue alone. The artist employs consistent character design, sequential panel composition, and speech balloons to construct narrative momentum. This work exemplifies early newspaper comic strips, which established the visual vocabulary that would define the medium: recurring characters, panel-to-panel continuity, and sight gags rendered through careful draftsmanship and spatial arrangement.
