Major Ozone's Fresh Air Crusade
This Sunday comic strip follows Major Ozone's campaign to promote fresh air and outdoor activity. Across six panels, the character evangelizes the health benefits of nature while encountering various urban and rural scenes. The strip uses sequential panel layout with speech balloons to advance its narrative—formal devices that newspapers were standardizing in the early 1900s. Comic strips like this, published in Sunday editions, built the visual language later adopted by comic books: gutters between panels, expressive lettering, and recurring characters delivering jokes or moral lessons. The strip's emphasis on healthful living reflects Progressive Era concerns, while its format demonstrates how newspaper comics trained readers in the grammar of sequential art.
