Makin' B'lieve
This Sunday strip by Dwiggins follows a group of children playing make-believe games across six panels. The narrative moves from the children imagining themselves as newspaper staff, to artist and patron, to baseball players, and finally to mountain climbers—each scene rendered in expressive black ink with dynamic poses and cluttered compositions. Dwiggins employs sequential storytelling through consistent character design and overlapping action, techniques fundamental to newspaper comics of the early 1910s. The strip exemplifies how the Sunday pages served as laboratories for visual narrative, where cartoonists developed the panel grammar and speech balloons that would define the emerging comic book medium.
