Married Life
· Early 20th century

A domestic comedy strip built on the collision between husband and wife over a cigar purchase. The husband recoils at the taste ("punk"), the wife defends her bargain-hunting, and the dispute cascades into absurdist consequences—he refuses to smoke it, she enlists the dog, he flees to the kitchen. The strip uses sequential panels, speech balloons, and visual escalation to generate humor from character conflict and reaction. Recurring married-couple protagonists became a staple format in newspaper comics, allowing artists to explore domestic friction and class anxieties through repetition and visual gag development. The rapid-fire panel flow and exaggerated expressions exemplify the visual shorthand that emerged as comics developed their own language distinct from prose or single-panel illustration.
