Mickie Says
This newspaper comic strip exemplifies the visual language developing in early twentieth-century dailies and Sunday pages. Two panels show a character named Mickie addressing readers directly, combining wordplay and sight gags typical of the era's humor. The first panel advertises a printing business; the second presents a visual pun about a street gang's appearance. The strip's layout—recurring character, speech balloons, sequential panels—became foundational to comic strip and comic book design. Such strips, syndicated across hundreds of papers, reached millions of readers and established conventions that would define the medium for decades.
