Mike the Messenger

A six-panel strip following Mike, a young messenger boy navigating city life and small financial troubles. The narrative moves from Mike's encounter with a Trocadero Girls advertisement to his meeting with Minnie, who reminds him of a two-dollar debt. Walt Desmond's strip employs the visual vocabulary of early newspaper comics: sequential panels with speech balloons, expressive body language, and recurring characters. By 1915, such daily strips had become standard fare in American newspapers, establishing the formal grammar that would define comic books. The format—affordable, serialized, and featuring working-class protagonists—made comics accessible to mass audiences and demonstrated the commercial viability of sequential art in print media.
