Mike the Messenger

Mike the Messenger follows a young delivery boy through urban adventures, told across six sequential panels with recurring characters and escalating physical comedy. The strip employs the visual grammar developed in early newspaper comics: distinct panel borders, speech balloons advancing plot and gag, and exaggerated body language conveying emotion and action. Mike's job as messenger provides a structural device for encountering different situations and characters—here, a delicate task for a lady client, an encounter while making deliveries, complications with police, and a frantic conclusion involving a doctor. The strip's economy of line and clear visual hierarchy made such daily and Sunday comics the direct ancestors of the modern comic book format that would emerge within two decades.
