Mike the Messenger
· September 13, 1916

A daily newspaper strip following Mike, a young messenger boy navigating urban life in early twentieth-century America. Each panel advances through a single episode: here, Mike encounters a series of street characters—con artists, hustlers, and ordinary citizens—in rapid-fire gags. The strip employs the visual language codified by newspaper comics: sequential panels with speech balloons, expressive gestures, and slapstick timing. Mike the Messenger exemplifies the daily strip format that dominated American newspapers before comic books existed as a medium. These newspaper serials, featuring recurring characters and standardized panel layouts, established the visual grammar that would define comics for decades.
