Militant Mary
· December 8, 1913

This single-panel strip presents a young woman in a stylized pose, addressing the reader directly through a speech balloon. The narrative describes her response to a preacher's sermon about controlling thoughts: she went home obediently, then spent the entire day thinking about money, unable to stop herself. The humor derives from the gap between intention and willpower. The strip employs the visual conventions established in early newspaper comics—a bordered frame, hand-lettered dialogue, simple but expressive line drawing, and a character rendered in the spare, gestural style typical of the 1910s. Such panels appeared regularly in Sunday editions and dailies, training readers in the visual language of comics before the format evolved into multi-panel sequences and eventually comic books.
