Militant Mary
This single-panel comic features Mary, a recurring character defined by her exasperated confrontations with domestic life. The strip's visual economy—a simple ink figure against white space—typifies early newspaper comics' reliance on bold line work and expressive body language rather than detailed backgrounds. Mary's complaint about small-town surveillance of women's clothing habits uses speech balloon text as the primary comedic vehicle, a technique that became standard in newspaper strips of the 1910s. The character's name and repeated appearances in daily and Sunday papers helped establish the serial comic strip format that would eventually feed the comic book industry of the 1930s onward.
