Militant Mary
A single-panel comic strip featuring Mary, a determined female character in early 1900s attire. The strip employs the visual conventions of newspaper comics: a simple line drawing, speech balloon containing the character's declaration, and artist signature. Mary fantasizes about imprisoning a crowd of men in a cage, then killing them with her scornful look and cooking them in her rage. The strip reflects the suffrage movement debates of its era through humor, using exaggeration and domestic imagery. Created during the height of newspaper comic strips' popularity, this work demonstrates how artists used recurring characters and direct address to readers—techniques fundamental to the medium's development from daily strips into the comic book form.
