Militant Mary

A single-panel comic strip by Steve Hyde featuring a female character with binoculars and military attire. The protagonist declares that of all the world's forces, only three never wait for any man: Time, Tide, and herself. The strip employs the visual conventions emerging in early newspaper comics—a bordered frame, hand-lettered dialogue, and caricature illustration. *Militant Mary* exemplifies the character-driven humor that populated Sunday newspaper pages in the 1910s, when comic strips transitioned from gag panels to serialized narratives, establishing the visual language that would define comic books.
