Militant Mary
· August 16, 1914

A single-panel gag strip featuring Mary, a character defined by her combative personality and willingness to defy authority. Here she boasts of teaching a minister's child to swear, then facing no consequences when the minister himself grows angry—suggesting her reputation for mischief precedes her. The strip employs the visual conventions pioneered in newspaper comics: a bordered frame, speech balloon dialogue, and a simplified line drawing style. Recurring characters like Mary appeared in newspapers' daily and Sunday pages, establishing the formula that would evolve into the modern comic book. The gag relies on personality and character recognition rather than narrative sequence, typical of early 20th-century newspaper comic humor.
