Militant Mary
A single-panel comic strip featuring Mary, a woman in glasses and period dress, addressing a correspondent identified as J.R.P. The strip employs the visual conventions that defined early newspaper comics: a bordered frame, hand-lettered dialogue in speech balloons, and simple line drawing. Mary's exaggerated features and posture convey personality through caricature. The humor rests on her flirtation with a pen pal whose clever writing style she admires, culminating in her prediction that his smile would charm her in person. Such strips populated Sunday pages and dailies in the early 1900s, establishing the grammar of sequential art and character-driven humor that would evolve into the comic book form.
