Miss Lonely Tries a Musical Hook on Mr Man
· June 14, 1908

This daily strip follows a woman's comedic attempts to attract a man's attention through increasingly elaborate musical schemes. Across seven panels, the narrative unfolds through visual gags: she plays instruments, he reacts with exaggerated dismay, and the action escalates with physical comedy and prop-based humor. The strip exemplifies early newspaper comics' reliance on sequential pantomime, speech balloons, and recurring character types. By 1908, such strips had become staples of Sunday and daily papers, establishing the visual language later adopted by comic books—panel borders guiding eye movement, varied frame sizes for pacing, and dialogue balloons anchoring character voices within the action.
