Monkey Shines of Marseleen
This Sunday comic strip follows a monkey character's attempts to sneak into a football game through a fence. Across six panels, the protagonist repeatedly encounters a woodpecker whose pecking creates holes in the barrier—each breakthrough undone by fresh damage. The strip employs the visual grammar that defined early newspaper comics: sequential panels with clear cause-and-effect, speech balloons carrying dialogue and thought, and a recurring character in escalating predicaments. The gag structure—obstacle, attempted solution, comic complication—became standard in dailies and Sunday pages, the very form that birthed the modern comic book. Simple line work and bold blacks made such strips economical to print while remaining visually immediate.
