Monkey Shines of Marseleen

A Sunday newspaper comic strip featuring Marseleen, a mischievous monkey character, in a six-panel adventure across a Parisian rooftop. The strip demonstrates early comic strip conventions: sequential panels with speech balloons, visual gags built through panel-to-panel progression, and a recurring protagonist. The artwork employs ink wash and pen linework typical of early newspaper color comics. By 1908, newspaper Sunday pages had become the primary vehicle for comic narratives in America, establishing the visual grammar—speech balloons, panel borders, action sequences—that would define the medium. These strips were reprinted and collected, forming the basis of what readers would later call comic books.
