Monkey Shines of Marseleen
· September 26, 1909

This Sunday strip follows Marseleen, a mischievous monkey character, through a sequence of visual gags involving sand and slapstick mishaps. The strip demonstrates the visual conventions emerging in early newspaper comics: sequential panels with speech balloons, sight gags built across multiple frames, and a recurring protagonist driving the narrative. The exaggerated linework and high-contrast printing are typical of the hand-drawn Sunday supplements that became the training ground for comic art. These newspaper pages—both dailies and Sunday color editions—established the foundational language of comics: panel borders, word-image integration, and the use of action sequences to build humor across time.
