Groucho the Monk

This comic strip follows Groucho, a rotund character in clerical dress, through six panels of physical comedy and verbal sparring. The narrative arc moves from a late-night confrontation at a train station, through Groucho's complaints about local women, to a climactic altercation where he attempts to visit his wife without a ticket, leading to a chaotic brawl. The strip demonstrates the visual conventions that defined early newspaper comics: sequential panels advancing a narrative, speech balloons carrying dialogue and internal monologue, and exaggerated body language conveying action and emotion. The loose, expressive linework and focus on slapstick humor reflect the period's comic strip aesthetics, when daily and Sunday newspaper comics served as primary mass entertainment and established the foundational visual language later adopted by comic books.
