Henpecko the Monk
This Sunday strip follows Henpecko, a hen-pecked monk character, through a domestic dispute. His wife pursues him downtown after he ventures out against her wishes, leading to escalating confrontations across eight panels. The strip demonstrates the visual conventions of early newspaper comics: recurring character types, sequential narrative across a grid layout, speech balloons advancing plot and humor, and exaggerated body language for comedic effect. Such Sunday pages and daily strips were the direct predecessors of the modern comic book, establishing the medium's fundamental grammar of panel flow, visual storytelling, and character-driven humor that would define the form throughout the twentieth century.
