Rhymo the Monk
· 1911

This Sunday strip follows Rhymo through a series of physical-comedy training regimens to prepare for competitive cycling. Each panel presents a self-contained gag: receiving a cast-off bicycle as a gift, practicing leg endurance by jumping into a barrel, lifting a stove to strengthen his back, and hanging from a doorway for grip training. The final panels subvert expectations when, despite his elaborate preparation, Rhymo forgets the fundamental skill—how to ride. The strip employs the visual vocabulary standard to newspaper comics of the era: sequential panels with speech balloons, exaggerated character proportions, and line work typical of early 1910s cartooning. The recurring character and episodic structure reflect the format's emergence as a daily and Sunday fixture in American newspapers, establishing conventions that would define comic strips for decades.
