Mr. Skygack, From Mars
An early newspaper comic strip featuring an alien visitor documenting Earth customs. The strip employs sequential panels with speech balloons to tell a gag: the Martian correspondent observes a bargain sale crowd as chaotic physical struggle. The drawing style—bold outlines, exaggerated figures, cross-hatching—typifies Sunday supplement comics of the early 1900s. Such strips established visual conventions that would define the medium: panel borders organizing narrative flow, dialogue contained in balloons, recurring characters and premises sustained across installments. Newspaper comics of this era formed the direct lineage to later comic books, proving that sequential art and humor could sustain reader interest week after week.
