Mr. Skygack From Mars

A Martian visitor observes Earth customs as a correspondent, recording peculiar findings in his notebook. The strip's visual economy—single panel, dense captioning, energetic figure work—typifies early newspaper comics. Artist Peter Newell pioneered this form, combining satirical observation with the sequential graphics that would become comic-strip language: speech balloons, expressive poses, and anthropomorphic contrast used for humor. Such strips ran in Sunday rotogravure sections and daily papers, establishing the foundational vocabulary—panel layout, character recurrence, sight gags—that later comic books would systematize and expand.
