Mr. Skygack From Mars
A visitor from Mars observes Earth customs with bemused detachment. This strip exemplifies early newspaper comic humor—the extraterrestrial outsider witnessing human behavior as strange and contradictory. The panel layout, speech balloon placement, and sequential narrative follow the visual conventions developed in Sunday supplement comics of the 1890s-1900s. Earth processes subjected to Martian scientific analysis—here, industrial manufacturing and chemical separation—became stock comedy material. Mr. Skygack's recurring character allowed readers to follow his ongoing adventures across multiple installments, a format that transformed comic strips from single gags into serialized narratives and helped establish the visual grammar that would define the medium.
