Mr. Skygack, From Mars
· 1908

A Martian correspondent visits Earth to file wireless reports for his notebook. This strip exemplifies the Sunday newspaper page format that birthed American comics: sequential panels with speech balloons, a recurring protagonist, and visual gags. The narrative unfolds across three tiers, establishing character through costume and expression. The artist employs pen-and-ink crosshatching typical of early 20th-century reproduction, with the mechanical spacecraft and period dress grounding the science-fiction premise in contemporary illustration. Such strips appeared alongside editorial cartoons and prose in newspaper supplements, pioneering the visual grammar—panel borders, word-image integration, and episodic storytelling—that would define comic books.
