Mr. Skygack from Mars
A Martian correspondent visits Earth to file observations for his notebook. The strip employs the visual conventions that defined early newspaper comics: multiple panels, speech balloons, recurring alien protagonist, and sight gags anchored in absurdist premise. Mr. Skygack's bemused reaction to human behavior—here, puzzlement at a suffragist—reflects the newspaper comic's dual function as entertainment and social mirror. Sunday newspaper supplements like this established the serial character and panel-based narrative that would become the foundation of comic books. The caricatured line work and expressive body language carry the humor across simple layouts, demonstrating how artists working in dailies and weeklies invented the medium's essential grammar.
