Mr. Twee Deedle

This Sunday newspaper comic strip follows the misadventures of a portly gentleman and his interactions with children, animals, and magical figures. The eight-panel layout uses sequential art to build gags through physical comedy and visual transformation—a child discovered reading on the stairs, a costumed character appearing at a door, fantastical creatures and crowds unfolding across the page. The strip employs the visual vocabulary newly codified by newspaper comics: panel borders to divide action, speech balloons for dialogue, and recurring characters in episodic narratives. By 1914, the Sunday funnies had become a major medium, with artists developing the grammar of comics that would directly influence the emerging comic book industry.
