Mr. Wad Has Nothing Left of His Spring Fever but the 'Spring!'
This Sunday strip follows Mr. Wad through four panels of escalating spring chaos. The opening shows him declaring his newfound wealth; subsequent panels depict him drawn into increasingly frantic activity with other characters—urged to join games, caught in collisions, and finally reduced to dazed exhaustion. The comic employs the visual conventions emerging from early newspaper comics: sequential panels with speech balloons advancing a narrative arc, exaggerated body language and motion lines conveying physical comedy, and the recurring protagonist encountering misadventure. By 1918, newspaper strips had established themselves as a primary form of popular entertainment, developing the panel-based grammar and character-driven humor that would define comics for decades.
