Mutt and Jeff

"With Mutt in New York — Jeff Falls Asleep While on Duty" is a Sunday page by Harry Conway "Bud" Fisher, whose *Mutt and Jeff* strip launched in the *San Francisco Chronicle* in 1907 as one of the first daily comic strips built around recurring characters. This page runs ten panels: the lanky schemer Mutt hatches a restaurant con, ordering a lavish spread and signaling Jeff by phone to fake a sneeze as a distraction — but Jeff, stationed at his post, keeps sneezing uncontrollably while a clock ticks away. Fisher's visual grammar is assured: overlapping speech balloons, clock inserts timing the gag, and punchy sound effects (*KER-CHOO!*) drive the slapstick rhythm. Such newspaper pages, syndicated nationally, supplied the direct formal template — panels, balloons, serialized cast — from which the comic book would directly descend.
