Why Mrs. Newlywed Got Another Ice Man
This Sunday strip follows a young wife's domestic misadventures across six panels. When her husband criticizes the baby's weight and food budget, she responds by weighing the child repeatedly—then accidentally locks the ice man out, leaving melted ice water throughout the house. The strip's humor rests on visual gags and escalating domestic chaos rendered in bold black ink. The recurring "Newlywed" characters appeared in newspapers during the early 1900s, when Sunday comics became staple entertainment. Sequential panels, speech balloons, and character-driven narrative were then still-novel techniques that transformed newspaper illustration into a distinct medium—the formal language that would define twentieth-century comics.
