Doc Yak

A Sunday newspaper strip following the misadventures of Doc Yak, an anthropomorphic goat operating as a veterinarian. This strip exemplifies the visual innovation of early comics: multiple panels arranged left to right with speech balloons advancing narrative action. The humor derives from slapstick physical comedy—here, surgical mishap and escalating consequences—rendered through exaggerated anatomy and energetic linework. Strips like this appeared in Sunday supplements and daily papers nationwide, establishing the visual grammar of sequential art: panel borders, word balloons, recurring characters, and sight gags that would become foundational to the comic book medium emerging in the 1930s.
